    Is an insect an creature?

Of course it is. Is a snail an insect? No, snails are mollusks. Discover the large "foot" that allows motility, and the antennas are obvious. Actually, a snail's eyes are on the two long projections on its head, and the projections are called eyestalks. These are characteristics of this animal.

    Characteristics of Animals

Animals are a kingdom of multicellular eukaryotes. They cannot make their ain food. Instead, they get nutrients past eating other living things. Therefore, animals are heterotrophs.

    Animal Cells

Similar the cells of all eukaryotes, fauna cells accept a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles (see Figure beneath). Unlike the cells of plants and fungi, animal cells lack a cell wall. This gives animal cells flexibility. It lets them accept on different shapes so they can become specialized to practise particular jobs. The human nervus cell shown in Figure below is a good example. Its shape suits its role of transmitting nervus impulses over long distances. A nervus prison cell would be unable to have this shape if information technology were surrounded past a rigid jail cell wall.

    Animal cell parts

Animate being Cell. The shape of an animal cell is not constrained past a rigid cell wall. A bacterial cell is shown above for comparison.

Human Nervus Cell. A human nerve cell is specialized to transmit nerve impulses. How practise you think the jail cell's shape helps it perform this function?

    Animal Structure and Function

Animals non merely accept specialized cells. Near animals also have tissues and organs. In many animals, organs form organ systems, such as a nervous organisation. College levels of organisation let animals to perform many complex functions. What can animals do that about other living things cannot? Most animals share these characteristics: sensory organs, movement, and internal digestion. All of them are illustrated in Figure below.

    • Animals tin can detect environmental stimuli, such every bit light, sound, and touch. Stimuli are detected past sensory nerve cells. The data is transmitted and candy by the nervous system. The nervous system, in turn, may direct the body to reply.
    • All animals can move, at least during some stage of their life bike. Muscles and nerves piece of work together to allow movement. Being able to move lets animals actively search for nutrient and mates. Information technology also helps them escape from predators.
    • Virtually all animals have internal digestion of nutrient. Animals eat other organisms and may utilize special tissues and organs to digest them. (Many other organisms absorb nutrients directly from the environment.)

    Animal characteristics.

Most animals share these characteristics: sensory organs, movement, and internal digestion.

    Beast Life Wheel and Reproduction

Many animals have a relatively uncomplicated life cycle. A full general animal life bicycle is shown in Figure below. Well-nigh animals spend the majority of their life equally diploid organisms. Just about all animals reproduce sexually. Diploid adults undergo meiosis to produce sperm or eggs.Fertilization occurs when a sperm and an egg fuse. The zygote that forms develops into an embryo. The embryo somewhen develops into an adult.

Beast Life Cycle. An animal life bike that includes just sexual reproduction is shown here. Some animals besides reproduce asexually. How does the animal life bike compare with the life cycle of a plant?

    Summary

    • Animals are multicellular eukaryotes that lack jail cell walls.
    • All animals are heterotrophs.
    • Animals accept sensory organs, the ability to motility, and internal digestion. They too have sexual reproduction.

    Review

    1. Place traits that characterize all animals.
    2. Country 1 mode that creature cells differ from the cells of plants and fungi. What is the significance of this difference?
    3. Draw creature digestion.
    4. Describe a full general animal life bike.
